Damp Proofing

Damp proofing is a protective measure which is applied to foundation walls. Typical building materials, such as brick, stone and mortar, are porous, allowing moisture to rise (rising damp). The moisture contains ground salts containing chlorides and nitrates which absorb further moisture and break down internal plaster.

Dry Rot

Dry rot occurs in timber as a result of fungal growth. Dry rot actually requires moisture to develop, and this is where the fungus begins to destroy the wood without the wood necessarily being wet.

Wet Rot

Wet rot is seen as a precursor to dry rot, where repeated drying and wetting of timber creates fungal growth which, once established, can continue to grow. Wet rot usually makes wood feel spongy, and allows timber to decay quickly.

Wood Worm
